Shiptest has specialized weapon cells. They are a kind of power cell that is used inside weapons and the standard variant has the same capacity has a high-capacity power cell. Weapon cells can be used like ordinary power cells in any application, but electrical guns like lasers will only accept weapon cells.
Weapon cells in Shiptest can be removed using screwdrivers and other weapon cells can be put in their place, although the exact method of removing and replacing them can be modified if need be. Weapon cells with extra capacity can be researched in addition to improve electrical weapons.
If weapon cells are added, energy weapons will have to be modified to use them exclusively (minus the MCR) and have energy consumption per shot adjusted proportionately to the weapon cells' increased capacities.
Why It's Good For The Game
Weapon cells provide a means of making ordinary energy weapons more practical to use without making them overly powerful. Being able to replace cells especially with upgraded versions with double the capacity (IIRC) will make standard energy weapons more appealing to use. At the same time the fact that energy weapons only use weapon cells means that you can't completely cheese ammo concerns by installing say, a bluespace power cell.
Having removable weapon cells can also make for emergent gameplay and open up additional options. For example, one could use weapon cells to substitute for normal ones in a pinch or use standard cell chargers and even APCs to charge their weapons.

MCRs use microfusion cells specifically, which are notable for not being able to be charged without a particular attachment. Presumably they have other things going on as well.
