Summary

From time to time, we get asked about the snapshots in the Forest Archive. The difference between lite and diff snapshots is also not clear. Let's create a guide to describe those and help with the most common use cases.

Completion Criteria

  • The guide outlines differences between lite, diff and latest snapshots.
  • The guide should be written in relatively simple terms. The reader should not be assumed to be an expert in CAR format. For more intricate details, it's best to link the user somewhere (or have a collapsible block with expert information)
  • Include examples with Lotus (as snapshot consumer).
  • The guide includes scenarios:
    • I want to have a node with data from January 2023 to today. What should I do?
    • I have a synced node, but I want blockchain data from a specific period. What should I do?
    • I have downloaded all those diff + lite snapshots. Can I have one big snapshot to import?
    • I have a big snapshot with recent blockchain data. How do I split it into diff + lite snapshots?
