Covid-19: What went wrong in Singapore and Taiwan? | 20 May 2021

They've been hailed as virus success stories - places that have seen virtually zero or single-digit Covid cases since the start of the year.

But this month, Singapore and Taiwan have both seen a sudden and aggressive rise in cases - with Singapore logging 248 new cases just last week, and Taiwan 1,200 local infections. Both places have gone into a heightened state of restrictions, limiting the size of social gatherings and closing schools.

The Great Resignation: COVID revealed how abnormal the modern workplace is | 17 May 2021

Is working from home the ultimate liberation or the first step toward an even unhappier "new normal"?

  • The Great Resignation is an idea proposed by Professor Anthony Klotz that predicts a large number of people leaving their jobs after the COVID pandemic ends and life returns to "normal."
  • French philosopher Michel Foucault argued that by establishing what is and is not "normal," we are exerting a kind of power by making people behave a certain way.
  • If working from home becomes the new normal, we must be careful that it doesn't give way to a new lifestyle that we hate even more than the office.

What are the Covid variants and will vaccines still work? | 26 November 2021

A new heavily mutated version of coronavirus (B.1.1.529 / Omicron) is of "great concern"... It has a long list of genetic changes - 50 in all. Of these, 32 are in the spike protein of the virus - the target of vaccines... Current vaccines are not an ideal match so might not work quite as well... Updated versions of vaccines against Covid variants are already being designed and tested...
