I thought it would only open *drawio.png files?

I experienced this issue as well and managed to resolve it.
Review workbench.editorAssociations in your VS Code settings, and delete the entry *png: hediet.vscode-drawio.

I haven’t had time to check whether it was my existing settings or this extension which caused this to happen.
