It would be really nice if it were possible to use metadata columns to label the tree and potentially to add coloured tree nodes based on metadata.

Yes! The metadata currently won't tell you anything about internal nodes, but if they were labelled in the tree then you could add extra rows to the metadata (or parse NEXUS annotations, which I don't think we currently do).

I know @richardgoater told me it was easy to colour tips in phylocanvas. (Our version of phylocanvas is probably very out of date now!)

There'll be a new Phylocanvas out in a few months, and it should be a bit easier to work with 👍
