Feature Request: Translated URLs

I love this repo and have a suggestion for a new feature:

It would be nice to have the option to translate the urls while generating the language folders.
This should be possible as it is working in the astro-i18next repo. But as this is no longer maintained it would be nice to have this functionality within this package.

Please note that the getStaticPaths() function will only run once. This limitation means that you cannot have translated urls, such as /es/acerca-de/ for /about/
in your ReadMe. Is the compatibility problem with the sitemaps the only things that blocks this feature?

Hi @coolusaHD,

That was my original goal for this plugin when I first created it a few years ago. Unfortunately, due to the way astro internals worked, this plugin was the closest I could get for being able to use a default locale and re-using the same astro templates for all languages without duplicating code.

Maybe there’s new features or changes that make it possible today. Feel free to investigate further. Some of the challenges include:

• Seeing whether getStaticPaths would work with translated routes
• Passing all the translated urls to the plugin
• Translating only parts of the url (e.g. /product/[productId].astro should be /es/producto/[productId].astro)
• Adding support to all utilities so that it’s possible to link to translated routes easily and know what route you are on
• Adding sitemap utilities to the plugin to generate the sitemap correctly

Perhaps it’s no longer technically impossible, but just extremely difficult. Ideally, Astro would support translated routes and using a default locale. Currently, I consider translated routes outside the scope of this plugin.

@jlarmstrongiv Let me have a look and maybe we can use some code or even maintainer from the old repo 😉.
Perhaps there are some people which love to get that functionality.
