  • Authority Control vs URIs
  • Researcher IDs
  • ORCID ID
  • Researcher Profiles
  • Access
  • Altmetrics
  • Find Out More...
  • Best Practices
  • Activity

##Why do I need an identifier?

  • authority control
  • disambiguation/uniqueness
  • bring together disparate forms of your own name (Edward Warga; Ed Warga, Edward J. Warga)

##ORCID ID

  • Create a profile
  • receive an ID (unique identifier)
  • link works to ID
    • use Search and Link feature to find your works (Scopus, CrossRef),
    • import using BibTex,
    • or add manually
  • Integrated with other systems

##Profiles

  • departmental website
  • Personal website (my.vanderbilt.edu)
  • Google Scholar
  • ORCID
  • FigShare
  • LinkedIn
  • Mendeley
  • Academia.edu

Access

  • Who can access your work?
  • Ideally your work will have a DOI (digital object identifier). This is a unique identifier which resolves to the version of record on the publisher site. By listing the DOI on your profiles and CV, anyone can follow the link to the work. However only those with subscriptions can read the article there (unless the publication itself is open access).
  • To make your work more accessible, you could archive a copy in DiscoverArchive Vanderbilt's institutional repository and include a link to this version in your profile or CV. This is similar to placing a copy of the work on your personal web site, Acedemia.edu, etc, but comes with the benefits of library involvement in managing the item over time. Your work will persist on the web if placed in the repository (contact Ed Warga for more information).

Altmetrics

  • tracking online mentions of your work.
  • Altmetric
    • explore altmetric data
    • incorporate altimetric badges on your website with the API
  • ImpactStory
    • link ORCID
    • produces a profile page of your work that you can share.
    • $ - subscription based.

Resources

##Best Practices Crowd sourced at workshop.

  • many different options - which one to use? do some research and find the best ones for you, or the the most used in your community.
  • keep it up to date... don't procrastinate!
  • CV vs Profile? generate a CV from a profile?
  • be selective to what you include on these profiles.
  • Keep a master list from which you can pull for these profiles.
  • consistency
  • Advanced Planning
  • look at examples before diving in.
  • Use DOIs
  • upload content -- be careful of copyright.
  • Copyright... Manuscript vs published pdf.
