No events fire when using CTRL-A, DELETE

I'm trying to clear two input fields when the user input is deleted.

Events fire as normal with the mouse and keyboard, but not keyboard only.

Example: I type input into the first field, select from menu, all good. The cursor stays in that field. Then I type ^A, hit delete, and no events fire, even when moving off the field.
