I have written a simple plugin which allows users to specify a tag, and a range of values to "shuffle" cards with a frequency value, so that their self-made cards can more easily be integrated with the flow of new cards. I am doing a shameless self-plug.

It's available here: https://github.com/HunterKing/anki-frequency-shuffle

Thanks for the contribution. Could you explain why one might choose to do this instead of making new decks for sentence/grammar cards and having separate new card limits for each?

It's very much a personal choice. To me, I want to treat Anki as an accomplice to my immersion; I find that if I go over 15 minutes a day in review my ability to continue will fall off sharply. I have a fine time mixing sentences in with my vocabulary because often I use sentences to show specific metaphorical examples of a vocab word. As well, tackling things in individual silos I think can often times make some concepts seem deceptively similar because they are being grouped by relation; For example, learning all of the kinds of fruit in a great long list versus shuffling them in amongst your other vocabulary I think you will find them a lot easier to mix up because they exist in the same "mental space" so to speak.

If you're familiar this is sort of the "cure dolly" method, although I know she is a bit of a controversial figure. She talks about this concept in this video although I am not fully subscribing to that method wholesale. I am mixing in sentences as a way to get a grip on words that get used in a way that may not be initially intuitive, 限る for example. However, when I go to make a set of 5 or however many, I often just insert a filler value to make sure that they will show up soon (e.g. 1000), but this presents them as a "wall" when I get to that spot in the deck, hence the plugin.

If you make them both subdecks and study the top level deck it would be a similar experience but I guess the new cards would still be somewhat separated. But sure, I guess this could be useful for some.

Truthfully, I didn't know that Anki has subdecks. It does so much! I will look into that, thanks.
