For this story, we looked at how the hard-right groups in the European parliament – Identity and Democracy (ID) and European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) – voted on major EU issues in the current election period (2019-2024). We identified a dataset of 19 votes on four major topics:
- Enlargement and integration: This reflects attitudes towards EU candidate countries and general EU collaboration.
- Green Deal: Five votes on the major components of recent EU environmental regulations summarized in the European Green Deal
- Migration package: Five votes that formed the components of the EU's Pact on Migration and Asylum
- Ukraine: Votes that determine the EU parliament's stance and actions towards the war in Ukraine
The website HowTheyVote.eu collects information on all roll-call votes in the European Parliament. Via their API and a CSV download, they offer records on how each MP voted, as well as which country and which parliamentary group they belong to.
While there is no official EU-level election polling, there are multiple sources that compile country-level polls to make prognoses for the European elections 2024. We have included these sources in our reporting:
