CSS style variables were removed from the v0.4.X release path in version v0.4.40 to maintain compatibility with IE11/Edge. If you wish to use style variables for theming of buttons, use v1.0.0 or later. To use style variables and maintain IE11/Edge compatibility, you will need to use a style module rather than plain sass/css.
