My name is Raffael Dzikowski and I'm a senior data engineer currently based in Munich, Germany. I'm passionate about building Data Platforms in a cloud environment (currently AWS). I enjoy architecting and infrastructure work as well as building tools that make working with data easier for people for whom data engineering is not a main focus, the goal being that they can access the data lake and get the answers they need at the level of abstraction they are most comfortable with. The architectural paradigm I've been interested in lately, which enables this kind of approach without growing the data part of the organization out of proportion is the Data Mesh Paradigm proposed by ThoughtWorks.
Here's a list of my public talks over the past few years
- Building a Central Hive Metastore in a Multi-Account AWS Cloud Environment, Data Festival 2018, Munich, Germany. Video
- The Scout24 Data Platform -- A Technical Deep Dive, AWS Summit 2019, Berlin, Germany. Slides on Slideshare, Slides from AWS (Including Intro to AWS Data Services) (with Dr. Sean Gustafson)
- The Scout24 Data Platform -- A Technical Deep Dive, Data Festival 2019, Munich, Germany. Slides on Slideshare (with Christian Dietze and Olalekan Fuad Elesin)
In terms of programming paradigms, I'm especially fond of the functional programming approach but have done a lot of object oriented programming as well.
In the AWS realm I've been mostly focussing on Data Infrastructure and Security. Services I have deep knowledge about include:
- IAM
- VPC
- EMR
- RDS
- Glue (particularly the Glue Data Catalog)
- Secrets Manager
- Simple Systems Manager
- ECS & EKS
- Route53
- ELB & ALB
- Kinesis Data Firehose
- Managed Streams for Kafka
- Lambda
- Step Functions
